Sovereign Series

Several modern sovereigns presented in the auction were particularly noteworthy, with lot 102 (1989 Sovereign PR 70 DCAM, £2,400 hammer) and lot 106 (2001 Sovereign PR 70 DCAM, £1,000 hammer) attaining the highest prices ever recorded in public auction. These extraordinary results demonstrate the continued strength and investment value of gold sovereigns.

Additionally, other sovereigns in the sale also garnered strong prices. Notable examples include
- Lot 14, 1860 inverted A for V, £1,950 hammer.
- Lot 59, 1915 Half-Sovereign Equal-finest PCGS MS 66, £1,450 hammer.
- Lot 69, 1888 S Sovereign First Legend NGC AU 55, £1,800 hammer.
- Lot 87, 1931 SA Gold Sovereign PCGS MS65+, £1,100 hammer. This is a new auction record for the grade. 66-graded coins have sold for less with several other auction houses.

In the realm of modern commemoratives, our latest sale highlighted a resurgence in the market following what could be considered an over correction. Seven coins stood out, demonstrating

The lot everyone was waiting for was lot 140, the iconic Una and the Lion, which we haven't seen many of in the last year. A 69-graded coin recently sold for £26,000 hammer in a UK auction in February. A raw example sold in another UK auction house in December 2022 for £24,050 hammer. Our ungraded example hammered for £33,000.

Lot 137, a 5oz Three Graces Proof NGC PF 70 ULTRA CAMEO, stood out as one of the exceptional realizations from Auction 82. A well-known US auction house sold a 'First Strike' example for $13,500 in their Showcase auction less than a month ago. Our example hammered for £19,500.

Lot 142 fetched the highest price for a Milled Edge Gothic Crown since 2021 (£7,750 hammer).

Of particular interest were the rarer Gold 2 oz Plain Edge Gothic Crowns.
- Lot 143, Plain Edge Quartered Arms, PF70 UCAM, £12,000 hammer. This puts it back to where it sold a year ago when it had just been released. It's worth noting that when we hammered a 70-graded example at £12,000 back in April 2022, this was without a 6% Buyer Premium.
- Lot 144, Plain Edge Portrait, PF70 UCAM, £9,250 hammer.

Lot 147, the Princess Diana Proof NGC PF 70 ULTRA CAMEO, also known as the 'Lady Diana Memorial Crown,' achieved the highest price ever recorded in public auction (£15,000 hammer). In January of this year, a well-known US auction house sold a similar PF 70 Ultra Cameo example for $13,500 hammer.

Finally, lot 150, the Gold 50 Pence Kew Gardens Proof NGC PF 70 ULTRA CAMEO, realized £5,750. This is yet another highest ever achieved price in public auction and not only reflects the strength of the market but also demonstrates The Coin Cabinet's ability to maximize returns for our clients.
